School funding deal now likely in June

The Turnbull government doesn't have "some giant hit list" of schools to lose money, but Education Minister Simon Birmingham is reluctant to release details until a funding deal is close to being sealed.

Education ministers will meet in Hobart on Friday to continue negotiations for a new funding agreement, to start in 2018, but a deal won't be finished now until June when the nation's leaders meet.

Senator Birmingham wrote to ministers on Monday requesting an extra catch-up ahead of the leaders' COAG meeting, which was supposed to have been in April, but was postponed after Victoria's premier Daniel Andrews and SA's Jay Weatherill couldn't make it.

The federal minister told his state counterparts he had been working on a model that ensured commonwealth funding was fairly and transparently delivered according to need, and tied to changes proven to improve student achievements.
